San Jacinto USD Dual Language Immersion Program

They offer an English and Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program. With which they want to help kids reach a high academic level, and become bilingual and biliterate.

This is a two-way dual language immersion program because both English-speaking students and Spanish-speaking students can join. They will study together and take the common content subjects in both languages. So they all learn how to read, write, and speak in English and Spanish, without leaving their academic success aside.

They use the 90:10 model of instruction. This means that the subjects will be taught most of the time in Spanish until they reach a 50-50 model. Kindergarten and first grade kids will be instructed 90% of the time in Spanish, and 10% in English. Second graders will study 80% of the time in Spanish, and 20% in English. Third graders will be instructed 70% in Spanish, and 30% in English. Fourth graders, 60% in Spanish, and 40% in English. And from fifth grade up, students will study 50% of the time in Spanish, and 50% in English.

Currently, they only have one school that offers this program, the Edward Hyatt World Language Academy. And it’s for kids from preschool to eighth grade level.

Edward Hyatt World Language Academy

Like we said, Edward Hyatt World Language Academy is the only San Jacinto USD school that offers the two-way dual language program. And it’s for both native Spanish speakers and native English speakers. They all study through the 90/10 two-way model.

They have the California State Seal of Biliteracy and Pathway Awards. This means that throughout elementary and middle school, kids get Pathway Awards, which are recognitions to their efforts in language learning. And high school graduates that are proficient in a language besides English get the State Seal of Biliteracy.

They teach using different methods, such as collaborative conversations, use of gestures, songs, and more. All teachers are bilingual and biliterate. And students learn the common subjects, like language arts, math, science, and history in Spanish and English.

If you are going to enroll your kids, remember that it’s a big commitment. Because it starts in preschool all the way to eight grade level. So kids actually become fluent in both languages.

They have limited spaces, so check their enrollment page not to miss anything. In order to enter the program, kids must preferably be kindergarten age. If you want to enroll your preschoolers, it’s possible, but you have to follow the preschool application process.

If you want to enroll your children in first grade, it’s possible, but consider that kindergarten waitlist kids from the year prior have preference.

Kids from 2nd grade to 8th grade levels can apply if they are Spanish dominant, bilingual or currently in a dual language program. If they are only English or English dominant, they can’t enter in those grade levels.

For the application process, you have to attend an informational meeting. Then, submit an interest form. If your kids were already in the program and are returning, they just have to re-register through the parent portal. Admissions will be done through a lottery.

If you want more details of the program, check their Master Plan.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the school has 86.8% of Hispanic/Latino enrollment. Which means that your kids will learn Spanish beyond the classroom, when talking to their Spanish speaking friends.
