Learning Spanish will be extremely beneficial for your kids short and long term. But forcing them into learning it it’s not the best way to do it. Instead, we should show them interesting ways of learning the language, so the love for Spanish grows into them. That way, they’ll be the first ones to want to study Spanish.
One of the coolest ways to do that is by making crafts. You can even use special occasions and festive days that they love to your advantage and make a craft in Spanish related to the day. That’s exactly what we’ll try to do in this blog. We’ll show you how to make recycled plant pots to celebrate Earth Day in Spanish.
Think about it: It’s a great activity to learn about Earth Day and celebrate it. As well as to learn one way to be more ecologist, acquire Spanish, and have tons of fun!
Make Your Own Fun and Adorable Recycled Plant Pots
What you’ll need:
- Two plastic bottles – Dos botellas de plástico
- Pocket knife – Navaja
- Marker – Plumón
- Paints – Pinturas
- Brush / paint brush – Pincel
- Earth – Tierra
- Plants or flowers – Plantas o flores
Steps:
- Grab two plastic bottles and with the help of a pocket knife cut them in half. For the first bottle, we’ll use the bottom.
- For the second bottle, we’ll also use the bottom of it, but with a twist. Grab the marker and the bottom of your second bottle. On the top of it draw any figure you want your bottle to look like. For example, you can draw two bear ears. So your future plant pot will look like it’s a cute bear. Then cut the outline of your figure. Remember not to draw anything on the bottom of the bottle, because you won’t be able to cut that as it’s the base. Now you have one normal bottle and another one with the shape of a bear.
- Time for one of the coolest steps: Painting! Grab your paints of your favorite colors and start painting your first bottle (the one with a normal shape). You can paint stars, hearts, smiley faces, anything you come up with. Or try some animal print style; draw some black and white lines, so it looks like a zebra. Or paint the background in black and then on top of it paint some shapes with neon colors, so it looks like a neon party. This is all about getting creative. Have fun!
- Now you have to paint the second bottle. Since this is a cute bear, let’s paint it like one. The color of the background is going to depend on the type of bear you want your plant pot to be. Is your bear polar, grizzly, panda? Then, with another color that stands out against the background, paint the cute little nose and mouth. Then, the eyes. Finally, with another color that stands out against the background, paint a curve inside the ears and color it. Basically, it’s like painting little ears inside the ears. This is only if you want to give extra shape to the ears. We gave you the example of a bear. But if you chose to make the shape of your flowerpot based on another animal, paint it accordingly to the animal you chose.
- Now fill your new plant pots with some earth, but make sure to leave space to plant the flowers.
- Plant the seeds. Or plant flowers and plants that are already a little bit grown.
- After you put in the flowers or plants, throw some more earth on top of the bottle and around the flowers. But, of course, don’t drown the flowers and plants with the earth. It’s just about putting a little bit more of earth to cover the roots or seeds.
- Water your plant pots and watch them decorate your garden or house beautifully!
This is one beautiful way to make your plant pots and watch your plants grow. As well as to entertain your kids, have a good time, and learn Spanish. But there’s another way of growing plants with some reusable materials. We’re talking about growing your avocado plant! Here’s how:
What you’ll need:
- Avocado pit – Hueso de aguacate
- Glass jar (it can be from a Gerber, a jam, a coffee, or anything else) – Frasco de vidrio (puede ser de un Gerber, una mermelada, un café, o cualquier otra cosa)
- Water – Agua
- Toothpicks – Palillos (para dientes)
Steps:
- Grab your avocado pit and stick one toothpick into each one of the sides of the avocado pit. So you’ll use 4 toothpicks, one for each side. Part of the
- toothpicks should be inside the avocado pit, but most of them have to stick out.
- Now grab your reusable glass jar and fill it with water. This will work as some kind of plant pot, at least for a while until the plant grows.
- Put the avocado pit on top of the jar full of water. The pit should be in the center of the jar, touching the water. The toothpicks should be laid to rest on the edges of the jar. So they can act as some kind of arms that hold the avocado and stop it from sinking in.
- Put the jar with the avocado pit under the sun. Every time you see the water has evaporated, fill it with more glass.
- Be patient. It will take quite some time for the plant to grow out of the avocado pit. But it’ll be worth it. Once the avocado plant has grown more, you can transfer it to one of the recycled plant pots you just made.
