The holidays are already full of magic, traditions, smells from the kitchen, music, decorations, and togetherness. That’s exactly why they’re one of the best times of year to support language learning without worksheets, pressure, or extra screen time. Here is a quick guide to make sure that you are able to create holiday connection through language learning.

As a bilingual mom and teacher, I always tell parents this:
You don’t need to “add” Spanish during the holidays, you just need to notice it.

When language is tied to emotions, memories, and shared experiences, it sticks. And the holidays give us endless opportunities to do just that.

Here’s how to use holiday events and activities to gently support Spanish learning, based on your child’s age and language level.

Why Holidays Are Perfect for Language Learning

During the holidays, kids tend to be more relaxed, emotionally engaged, spending more time with their family and friends, doing hands-on activities day in and day out.

This creates an ideal environment for language learning and you can help Spanish become something they experience, not something they are tested on.

Cookie Making in Spanish

Baking together is one of the easiest ways to bring Spanish into your home and make sure you create a holiday connection through language learning.

Focus on single words:

  • harina (flour)

  • azúcar (sugar)

  • huevo (egg)

  • mezclar (mix)

Say the words naturally as you cook. And please do not test them on anything, just add the words casually in conversation.

Use short phrases:

  • Vamos a mezclar

  • Pon la harina

  • Está listo

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s exposure and confidence.

Decorating the Tree

Decorating is visual, repetitive, and joyful and absolutely  perfect for language learning.

Easy holiday words:

  • árbol (tree)

  • estrella (star)

  • luces (lights)

  • esfera (ornament)

An easy way to create holiday connection through language learning while decorating the tree is by creating connection to the words, ask them to “find the estrella”, or “how we should put the luces”.

Holiday Events & Traditions

So this are all things that you are probably already doing, like, family gatherings, posadas, school events or a neighborhood celebration. They are all easy scenarios where you can add spanish by gently highlighting in the language things that you see, repeat familiar phrases and point out words they recognize.

Look Up Holiday Words Together

This works especially well for school-aged kids. And it is one of my favorite activities, as it shows kids that you too are learning. So, create holiday connection through language learning by picking a few holiday related words and searching for their meaning. Write them down, say them out loud and use them throughout the day. Make a game of it!

Holiday Songs in Spanish

One of the easiest ways to create holiday connection through language learning is through music. This is because music is a powerful tool that allows kids to remember rhythm and grammar.

Try:

  • Spanish holiday songs

  • Familiar songs in Spanish versions

Sing together while:

  • Cooking

  • Driving

  • Wrapping gifts

Even passive listening helps build pronunciation and comprehension.

Make It About Connection, Not Correction

One of the biggest mistakes parents make is correcting too much.

During the holidays:

  • Let Spanish be imperfect

  • Celebrate effort

  • Keep it light

If your child feels safe and successful, they’ll want to keep going. It’s important that you dont turn the holidays into another class or lesson. You just need to notice moments, use a few words, repeat them often, and enjoy the experience together.

Those small, joyful moments are how bilingualism grows naturally, over time, and with love.
