How to Explore Nature in Spanish

Do you want your kids to learn Spanish words and phrases about nature? Cool! Then it’s time to explore nature in Spanish! Think about it: The best way to learn something is by being immersed in it. So here are some ways to explore nature with your kids to learn Spanish as a family:

Go out for a walk

Remember that at the very beginning of this blog we told you to go for a walk with your children? Well, weren’t kidding; that was real! Go outside for a walk. You can go anywhere, to a park, to a meadow, or simply a walk to the school or to the zoo…

While you do that talk about the nature that you see and the natural things that you wish were there. For example: If you miss the flowers that used to grow in front of your house, talk about them with your kids, describe the flowers for them.

Most importantly, your kids must talk as well. They can point out the things related to nature that they see and love, and talk about them. You can also ask them questions about what you’re seeing on your walk.

For example: “¿De qué color es esa ardilla?” (What color is that squirrel?) Or “de todos los animales que ves aquí, “¿cuál es tu favorito y por qué?” (Of all the animals you’re seeing here, which one is your favorite one and why?)

Of course, make sure everything you talk about is in Spanish.

Plant flowers

If you have a garden, go plant some flowers and plants as a family. Go to the market and buy your favorite seeds and flowers, and everything you need. Then go to your garden and start the activity.

Your kids can help you plant the seeds, cover them with the earth, and water them. While you all do that together, talk about the process you’re doing.

To start the conversation, you can ask them questions like “¿cuál es tu flor favorita?” (what’s your favorite flower?) Or encourage them to say something in Spanish by asking them to do something, like “descríbeme lo que estás haciendo ahorita” (describe to me what you’re doing right now).

When telling your kids what to do and guiding them through the process, do it in Spanish. For example: “¡Muy bien! Ahora riega las plantas, por favor” (Very good! Now wáter the flowers, please).

It’s going to be super fun for them, therefore they’ll want to talk more about nature and what they’re doing.

Organize a picnic

Here’s a fun and cute idea to bond with your kids while practicing your Spanish speaking skills: Organize a picnic!

Picnics are a great way to go out into nature! You can go to a park near your house or to a famous national park if picnics are allowed there. Choose any location you want that’s outdoors.

Bring your and your kids’ favorite snacks. The Spanish practice can start from the kitchen while you all prepare the basket and the food. You can talk in Spanish about what you’re cooking for the picnic.

Ask your kids questions about their favorite snacks and allow them to help you cook them as long as it’s safe. That’s another immersion activity.

Then, chat in Spanish while you walk to the park. When you’re there, ask them to help you arrange everything.

During the picnic, talk about what you’re experiencing out in nature and what you’re seeing. Talk about the animals there and the food. Remember to encourage your children to speak and listen carefully. You can also let the Spanish conversation flow into any topic your kids want to discuss.
