Traditional Spanish Food

Paella

If you’ve heard about Spain, you’ve probably heard about paella. It’s a traditional Spanish dish that has become famous around the world. It’s originally from Valencia, Spain.

Even though you can try to prepare it at home or find it in your country, there’s nothing like going to Spain and eat it there.

The base of it is rice, specifically “arroz bomba” (another type of rice highly cultivated in Spain). It also has “bajoqueta” (a flat green bean), “garrofó” (a white broad bean), tomato, saffron, olive oil, water, and salt.

There are also debates about the meat that paella has to have. Some people add pork ribs, shrimp, duck, and even snails. Oh, and of course, some also add vegetables, like pepper. It depends on the part of the country where you’re eating it and the person who’s cooking it.

But the Consellería de Agricultura de la Comunidad de Valencia (Department of Agriculture of the Community of Valencia) has declared that there are 10 classic ingredients of the paella. The ones mentioned above, and, in terms of meat, there is chicken and rabbit meat.

But here’s one important detail: Don’t try to add “chorizo” (pork sausage).

Don’t forget to celebrate the “Día de la Paella” (Day of the Paella) on September 20th! That would be a great day to visit Spain, so you can celebrate this delicious dish in its country of origin.

Tortilla de Patata

Tortilla de patata, also known as “Tortilla Española”, is a traditional Spanish dish that doesn’t really have many ingredients, and still many people love it. It consists of eggs, olive oil, salt, and, of course, potatoes.

A common debate is whether the tortilla de patatas has to have onion or not. Some people and some chefs love it with onion and some others hate it. You’ll have to taste it to choose how you prefer it.
