Really! It not only is in Spanish, but it also showcases how magical Colombia is, and it’s fun. So it’s the perfect combination of language, culture, and entertainment. There’s no better way to get immersed in a language and acquire it than using these three things.
Okay, but now you might be wondering: How can my kids learn Spanish through this movie? Don’t worry, we got your back! Just take a look at this “Encanto” movie guide for learning Spanish, and watch your kids have fun while learning.
Spanish Phrases in “Encanto”
One of the best ways to learn through a movie is by using phrases from the characters in our everyday lives. It’s fun and practical!
We know this might sound crazy, but we promise you and your children can apply some phrases from your favorite Spanish movies to your real-life situations. After all, characters express feelings, ideas, and thoughts, just like us.
And let’s be honest, even the movie phrases that don’t sound too realistic for real life, kids still repeat them. Simply because they loved the movie, so they have fun saying the dialogues out loud. This will also help them improve their Spanish because they’ll be acquiring new words and practicing their speaking.
So here are some Spanish phrases from “Encanto” that you and your kids can use:
¿Cuál es tu don? / What’s your gift?
Since the characters in “Encanto” have a special gift, this is a question used to ask someone what’s his/her gift.
Kids can use this to learn how to ask a question with “cuál” (which) in Spanish. They can replace “don” for any word they want.
No sé por qué no te concedieron un don, pero esa no es una excusa para que sigas dañando a esta familia / I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift but that’s not an excuse for you to keep hurting this family
In order to learn this phrase, you should divide it into two parts.
First comes the phrase “no sé por qué no te concedieron un don”. This is the perfect expression to learn how to say in Spanish that you don’t know why something happened: “No sé por qué…”. Once you master this phrase and the words in it, you and your kids can adapt it to your life situations.
Then, comes the part “pero esa no es una excusa para que sigas dañando a esta familia”. This is like a reprimand. It’s meant to teach someone that a certain thing is not an excuse to do something bad.
So it’s great to teach kids exactly that. Of course, don’t use these words exactly because they’re quite hurtful. You and your kids can adapt it to your situation.
For example: “Sacar diez no es una excusa para sentirte superior a tus compañeros” (Getting an A+ is not an excuse to feel superior to your classmates).
Through this phrase they’ll also learn some words they might hear during a reprimand in Spanish.
¡Ahí estás! / There you are
This is a fun and exciting phrase for when you find something or someone. For example: When your kids play hide and seek and one of them finally finds the other, he/she can say: “¡Ahí estás!”.
Eres perfecta tal cual eres / You’re perfect just the way you are
This is a great Spanish quote for beginner learners! It is not too difficult and not too long. Plus, the words are so commonly used that they’ll practice over and over again with them.
Children can use it to cheer someone up by telling them they’re perfect the way they are.
But do you know how your kids will acquire this phrase more easily? If you say it to them. It’s a beautiful thing to say to your babies to make them feel better about themselves and help improve their self-esteem.
And if they hear you say it out loud many times, they’ll learn it and its meaning and might even start repeating it.
Mi vida, ¿estás bien? No te esfuerces demasiado / My life, are you okay? Don’t try too hard
In Spanish, “mi vida” (my life) is a cute pet name, like “my love”. You can use this with your kids, as many Hispanic parents do. Kids can also use it to refer to others, like their pets.
Through this phrase your kids will learn a highly important and common question in Spanish: “¿Estás bien?” to ask others if they’re okay.
They’ll also learn “no te esfuerces demasiado” to tell people not to try too hard. Not because hard work is bad, but there are situations where we should take it easy.
If you think about it, it’s a great phrase you and your children can use when a loved one is sick. Because you’re asking others how they are and telling them not to try too hard, because maybe they don’t feel well enough.
So now you see this is one of the best phrases from “Encanto”, because your kids will learn many common words in Spanish. And they’ll be able to use them on different occasions.
A las personas raras de la familia a veces les hacen mala fama / The weird people of the family, sometimes get a bad reputation
This is about the black sheep of the family.
No puedes apresurar el futuro / You can’t rush the future
If you think about it, this can be a very deep quote. You can’t rush the future, so be in the present. It’s a great phrase for when kids want to grow up fast or when they’re impatient about something.
But be careful, your kids might start saying it to you when you tell them to hurry up, haha.
No hay nada que se pueda derrumbar que no arreglemos juntos / There’s nothing that can fall apart that we won’t fix together
This is about the power of teamwork. You can use this when your kids feel bad about something they did wrong or broke to let them know you will help them repair it.
This way they’ll learn how to give support in Spanish to their loved ones. Maybe later they’ll be using this phrase to let their friends and family know that they’ll help them.
No lo olvides / Don’t forget it
This phrase will come in handy on many different occasions, especially when your kids don’t want to forget something. As you can read, these are common words we use often.
Isabela no se sentía feliz / Isabela wasn’t feeling happy
This is a great quote your kids can say to explain to you that they or somebody else weren’t feeling well. Especially that they were sad. It’s good to start understanding feelings in Spanish and how to express them.
Eres igual de especial que cualquier otro en esta familia / You’re as special as anybody else in this family
This is the perfect phrase to make your kids feel loved and special. Especially during difficult times. Let’s say they’re feeling down or are struggling with their role in the family. Then this phrase will remind them that they’re as special as anybody else.
Eres justo lo que la familia necesita / You’re exactly what the family needs
This is another great phrase to make a loved one feel loved. Especially to make them feel like they contribute greatly to the family and that they’re an essential part of it. As a parent you can use it with your kids, but your kids can also use it with another family member (mom, dad, grandpa, sister…)
Nunca dudé en que lo lograrías / I never doubted you would make it
Let’s continue with the phrases to make a loved one feel loved. Here’s one that’s perfect to express to someone how proud you are of them and how much you always believed in them.
Your kids can use this with you, their siblings, any family member, and their friends whenever they achieve something great. Especially when it’s been clear that your kids have supported this other person through it all.
For example: If a friend wins the hockey tournament, your kid can tell him/her: “Nunca dudé en que lo lograrías”.
¿Sabes qué? No te preocupes por mí porque tengo una asombrosa familia / Do you know what? Don’t worry about me because I have an amazing family
To learn it, you can divide this phrase into three parts.
First, the question “¿sabes qué?” This is a very common question to hear in Spanish for both kids and adults. It’s used before you tell someone anything. It can be used in exciting moments, but also in angry moments, like when your kid is fighting with a friend.
For example: “¿Sabes qué? No quiero hablar contigo ahorita” (Do you know what? I don’t want to talk to you right now).
Second, the “no te preocupes por mí” quote. When your kids are playing rough or doing something dangerous and you tell them to be careful, they might answer you with this phrase.
Third, the reason: “Porque tengo una asombrosa familia”. This way they’ll learn the highly important word “porque” (because) and how to give a reason why they said or did something.
Yo amo a esta familia / I love this family
You’ll feel incredibly appreciated when your kids tell you this phrase. It’s a good quote for children to learn how to express their love to their family.
Plus, it’s easy for beginners to learn.
Voy a salvar la magia / I’m going to save the magic
Here’s one that may sound too fantastic for real life, but kids love saying these kinds of things. For them, the world is magical, because they’re still discovering it. Plus, they love to play in imaginary and fantastic worlds, so this quote will come in handy for playtime.
They’ll feel like heroes!
