She’s always helping me with accents and talking about how to get our kids fluent and fight for bilingualism. And this is especially challenging if you don’t speak a second language or if you don’t speak the second language that your kid is learning. So we’re discussing ways you can help your kids if your kids are in a dual-language program or in a bilingual program or simply in Spanish classes. How can you help your child at home? It’s very hard.

So what we’re gonna do is give you a phrase that you can ask or say during a certain time of the day that can become a part of your routine. So, we have other videos on a question about using the bathroom every single night when they’re brushing their teeth. You ask your child in Spanish where is the toothbrush, and the kid responds here is the toothbrush.

We have another phrase that we have incorporated on the playground, careful, and introducing new friends that we meet, and today we’re gonna talk about the time that we eat. We can say this three times a day so anytime we’re ready to eat you know in English we say alright guys let’s eat. How do we say that Alex?
Spanish Phrase #1 – How to say “Let’s Eat” in Spanish: Vamos a Comer.

Vamos a comer.

Very good.

Vamos a comer.

And I’m nervous that…you know, I think a lot of our English speaking only parents are nervous that they’re gonna give their kids an accent. Well first, you’re not gonna give your kid an accent and it’s better they have an accent and they’re bilingual than not bilingual at all. But, whenever you’re reading our blog and you see the v sound in Spanish you have to remember there is no v sound in Spanish. Alex can you show them your lips when you’re saying vamos.

Vamos.

But it’s not a hard v is it? Or is it (b)amos or vamos?
Alex
Vamos because it is a uv, bicicleta, vamos. With the uv you bite your lips, with verde bicicleta you just….
Micah
Good to know so ‘vamos a comer’ ‘vamos a comer’, let’s eat, you can say that morning, noon and night. You just keep saying it, the kids will eventually realize that’s what you say right before you eat.
And then we’ll be adding on different verbs. Let’s play, vamos a jugar.

And my favorite one vamos a limpiar.

Yes, but for now ‘vamos a comer’ ‘vamos a comer’ very good.
The second thing, if you’re sitting down for dinner, you would ask somebody to pass you the…..So how would you say that? Could you pass me the…..
Spanish Phrase #2 – How to Say Pass Me (the salt) in Spanish: Me Pasa (la sal).

Me pasa…la sal.

Whatever it is. So, we’re not gonna know how to say every single thing that you want to pass. So some Spanglish is totally okay with this. So me pasas…the salt, me pasas…the ketchup. Me pasas…whatever it is that you need. What’s important here is that the kids are learning how to say could you do this for me.

Exactly. So our two phrases, vamos a comer and then me pasas….. Whatever you want passed. Try these Spanish phrases this week and incorporate it on a daily basis to help your kids with their Spanish. Bye now.
