As parents of bilingual kids, you might be in constant search for common Spanish questions and phrases to teach your children. You’re doing a great job there!

Let us recommend you teach your kids the question “¿Es tuyo?” (Is it yours?). First, because it’s a very common question we all ask throughout our lives. Second, because it’s a way to teach our children to ask first if somebody owns something before taking it for ourselves.

Good news! That’s exactly what our students have been learning at TruFluency Kids online Spanish immersion. If you want to know how we teach this important question, read below.

“¡Es Mío!” (It’s mine!) Chapter 2

For this new course at TruFluency Kids’ we’ve been reading the book titled “¡Es mío!” (It’s mine!”). The story is divided by language levels, so kids don’t feel lost or confused. It’s about some animals that find a suitcase in the jungle and start claiming the objects inside it for themselves.

Here’s the first page of an original TruFluency Kids Spanish story for Spanish learners for levels 1.3 to 2.1. The keywords and most used phrases are in bold.

  • Cerca de los monitos hay una cascada. / Near the little monkeys there is a waterfall.
  • Bebé Jaguar y Tapir juegan en el agua. / Baby Jaguar and Tapir play in the water.
  • Bebé Jaguar dice: Esta cascada es muy alta. / Baby Jaguar says: This waterfall is very tall.
  • Tapir: Sí, es muy alta. Y el agua de la cascada está fresca. / Tapir: Yes, it’s very tall. And the water of the waterfall is fresh.
  • Bebé Jaguar dice: Me encanta jugar en la cascada. ¡Es súper divertido! / Baby Jaguar says: I love playing in the waterfall. It’s super fun!

Spanish Practice: Ask Spanish Questions to Your Kids

At TruFluency Kids Spanish immersion we like to do different activities surrounding the story we’re reading. So, students enjoy learning.

One of the things we always do is ask different questions in Spanish related to the story and the class’ topic. This way kids must answer back in Spanish; they’ll practice their speaking skills, and we’ll see their progress and reading comprehension.

So, for example, our teachers could ask:

  • ¿Cómo está el agua de la cascada? = How is the water of the waterfall?

And the kids could answer:

  • El agua de la cascada está fresca = The water of the waterfall is fresh.

We also recommend that parents ask Spanish questions about the storybook. This way kids keep practicing answering and speaking in Spanish at home.

Here’s an example of a Spanish question and answer from our lesson plan for parents about the “¡Es mío!” course. So you and your kids can practice:

  • ¿El reloj es tuyo? = Is the watch yours?
  • Sí, es mío = Yes, it is mine.
  • No, no es mío. = No, it is not mine.

Don’t accept easy Yes or No answers nor answers with a single word. Remember that responding in complete sentences is great practice for kids to become confident in their fluency.

What Do Our Spanish Classes for Kids Include?

Above we showed you a small part of how we conduct one of our online Spanish classes. But we’re full of more surprises and if you truly liked how we teach, you’ll be happy to hear there’s more!

  • A song to help solidify the vocabulary and phrases in a fun and memorable way
  • Live classes to practice speaking in real conversations (if you’re interested)
