Spanish Schools for Kids in Flagstaff, Arizona

Flagstaff is a place very well known because it’s surrounded by mountains, desert and ponderosa pine forests, and the Grand Canyon National Park. Their large amount of nature makes it a perfect city to explore lots of different outdoor activities, but their small town charm also gives us the opportunity to enjoy things such as art and culture among others.

But also, Flagstaff is a city in which Spanish is the non-English language spoken by the largest group as 19.9% of the population is Hispanic according to Arizona Demographic.

Arizona’s Spanish-speaking population is growing day by day, this is why a bilingual education for your kids is a great way to give them a head start for their future as being bilingual opens the door for Job opportunities, being able to get to know people from other places, etc.

In TruFluency Kids, we know that finding the right choice for Spanish Education might be a little bit complicated as there are plenty of options and every family is a world with different needs and goals. This is the reason why we took the time to search for the best options for Spanish learning in the Flagstaff area, so you don’t have to do it.

Flagstaff Unified School District

About This Resource

In this guide, we will show you some of the best Spanish language learning places within the Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) (see map). This school district has approximately 11,500 students and operates 16 schools.

Since FUSD doesn’t count with a Spanish Immersion program, in this guide we will show you different options that are also part of the FUSD boundaries such as Magnet, charter, and private schools. In this case, we will be focusing on a Magnet school as this is the best option for public education in Coconino County.

A Magnet school is a free public elementary and secondary “school of choice” that operates within the existing public schools in a district. In Magnet schools, the focus is on specific areas of interest, such as arts, world languages, science, technology, engineering, and math. Magnet Schools teach the “normal curriculum” but with a specific approach.

Puente de Hozho Bilingual Magnet School

Puente de Hózhó Magnet School

Puente de Hózhó Bilingual Magnet School is a public school located in Flagstaff, AZ. The school serves PK-5 and its student population is approximately 360. PdH has two dual-language programs: Navajo and Spanish Immersion. Currently, grades 6-12 have an International Baccalaureate continuum being established to complement PdH’s programming. This school was featured in the Harvard Education review for “best practices” for culturally sustaining teaching. They hold a radical belief in the potential of culture, children, and language in a local, regional, national and international context.

The idea of PdH schooling was to create an educational environment where students of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds could learn together in harmony while pursuing “the Power of Two” or the ability to be proficient in two languages. Puente de Hózhó’s mission is to build a “bridge of beauty” between learners and speakers of Diné (Navajo), Spanish and English, and empower children to be both multicultural and multilingual. They look to provide an environment for their students where they can pursue academic excellence, culture, bilingualism, and diversity. In their Spanish immersion programs, they also have a multi-age/Montesorri- inspired program.

Puente de Hózhó has an overall B grade in Niche, Also, they hold the place #11 in Best Public Elementary Schools in Coconino County. Also, this school has great reviews in Greatschools.org, like this one:

“My daughter is in kindergarten so I have only a couple months of experience with this school, but so far I am very impressed. Her teachers seem really amazing. The principal is very friendly and seems enthusiastic about the school (I believe it’s his first year at PDH). The front desk admin folks I’ve been really impressed with – they have been extremely helpful and have gone out of their way to let me know what’s going on and make me comfortable. My daughter went into the Spanish-English program with no previous Spanish experience, and I’m blown away by how quickly she is picking up the language. I imagine each child deals with this in a different way; I have talked to people with whom the Spanish aspect of it just didn’t “click.” But it’s working great for us so far.”

Private Schools, Preschool, and After-School Programs for Spanish Learning

We know that not all parents are interested in enrolling their children in a public school. Even though the Magnet school shown above is a great choice when it comes to Spanish education.

After an exhaustive investigation, we couldn’t find many places that offer Spanish education for kids in this area, however, to close this article with a high note, we couldn’t forget to talk about our Spanish immersion classes for kids.
